Wood floors are a lifetime investment, and decision concerning them should not be taken lightly. Wood floors are not impervious to the day to day grit, food and water. Preventive maintenance like area rugs, floor protectors on furniture and proper hardwood cleaner and routine maintenance should always be exercised. Improper products can contribute to additional wear, may void your warranty, and cause failure when recoating.
Regular Maintenance
- Use throw rugs inside and outside of doorways to help prevent grit, dirt and other debris from being tracked onto your wood floors and scratching them. In the kitchen, place an area rug in front of the sink.
- Place soft plastic or fabric-face glides under furniture legs to prevent scuffing and scratching. When moving heavy furniture, do not slide on the wood flooring. Pick up the furniture completely to protect the wood flooring.
- Avoid walking on your wood floors with cleats, sports shoes and high heel.( a 125- pound person walking in high heels delivers and impact force of 2,000 pounds per square inch; an exposed heel nail can exert up to 8,000 pounds per square inch. This kind of impact can dent any floor surface.)
- Never wet-mop a wood floor. Standing water can dull the finish, damage the wood and leave a discoloring residue. Wipe up spills immediately with towel slightly dampened with water or a wood cleaner approved for your floor. Harsh cleaners like ammonia or vinegar or vinyl floor care products are not necessary and may damage the floorˇ¦s finish, voiding warranty.
- Use a humidifier throughout the winter to minimize wood contraction and use dehumidifier throughout the humid season to minimize expansion.
